New ideas - generated by the group 8th May
Feedback from the interim presentation was for us to be more innovative for our final concept.
A major rethink is necessary.
We decided on each of us generating ideas and then coming together, choosing two main ideas and looking in to them in more detail.
1. Food Games - Games that groups of people can play, which involve cooking and eating meals, so in a way, you are playing games with friends and having a meal together at the same time. This is good for groups of people about to go out, who dont want a full meal but maybe some food before they go and eat together. Another idea, was in clubs, having like a food room where groups of people can play games and eat together, as most people would rather eat after going out in the evening.
2. Online food community/social club - Online collection of recipes with a chat window so friends can cook along together, cooking the same meal or different meals. This would solve the problem of anti-social eating, as you would not be cooking on your own or eating on your own. You could ask other people for recommendations, suggestions etc. Friends could chat together while cooking, or you could chat to new people. If this was a global site, it would mean that any time you wanted a meal and used this site, there is likely to be someone online also cooking, eg, if you came in after a night out and wanted to cook something very early in the morning, someone in another time zone could also be cooking along. It wouldnt be like facebook, with a full profile so theres no worry of giving out addresses or things like that. Another thing, if you wanted a meal, but had limited food in the cupboard and didnt know what to make, you could go online and its possible that others would know of something you could make with those limited ingredients.

Idea / Concept
Bring in the franchises
McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Spud-u-like, subway, dominos etc.
They can compete the student pound.
Shared seating area, open 24 hours
There is a huge amount of unused space in the canteen.
hand it over to these guys, staff it with students, so staffed only in term time.
The current staff in the canteen and refectories have to be more expensive than students with paid holidays and over 25's minimum wage, plus what do they do 26 weeks of the year?
Clear benefits
Familiar Food aimed at youth market
Choice.
Freshly made.
Speedy delivery.
Employment and business exposure for the students.
UWE would get more rental income from 6 outlets rather than one.
Each refectory could be a mini outlet of each of the franchises.
Plus there needs to be a proper supermarket on campus.

Summary
There appears to be on campus one catering company that has monopolised the food supply.
The lack of competition has driven down service, and quality and upped price.
There aren't any ques for the food because the only people who want it are those who have no alternative, because they have forgotten their packed lunch!
No one would choose to eat at the canteens or refectories.
It seems that the stakeholder that is well taken care of is UWE not the students.
A recurrent theme throughout the university is that student time is very cheap.
We are biased, I would say that student time is valuable.
There is money to be made, there is money in the pockets of students and if the food service was done properly more would be spent inside the university campus.
